bootstrap, strawman proposal, fabrication tent – 729 viewsThis diagram was the initial challenge and 'straw man' proposal, put to the Mars Homestead 'programming team". This concept evolved into the Hillside Settlement 1. The light blue manufacturing areas & equipment would be brought from Earth. the dark green modules would be manufactured on site, to enlarge the base. The brown modules are for constructing pressurized rovers and trailers.

Fiberglass cylinder, on Earth – 754 viewsExample of an existing fiberglass cylinder, just slightly smaller in size than the cylinder & sphere concept, or the Plains Base. t
Sphere-ThreeTubes.jpg
Sphere, connecting 3 habs – 549 viewsspherical connector, joining 3 cylinder habitats, larger ones are 5 meters in (inside) diameter, similar to that of the Plains Base

Spherical connector – 686 viewsSpherical connector, used to connect cylindrical fiberglass habitats, approx. 5 meters in diameter, could be slightly smaller.

Two Level Cylinder Concept – 693 viewsdetail of 2 level "Cylinder & Sphere" design exercise. Cylinder habitats are 5 meters inside diameter, and nominally 20 meters in length, or more. Green spherical connectors join them together and provide pressure doors. This shows a two floor design, wiith ladders in the vertical connectors. Some habs are omitted at the lower lever to provide access by service vehicles. There would be a radiation canopy, not shown, similar to the Plains Settlement.
