CfM2: Covering the Habitats with Martian regolith – 1642 viewsCargo vehicles, once emptied and dragged to a final location, are used as habitats for the Mars base. The vehicles will be covered with loose Martian dirt to provide radiation shielding. Note the wench pulling a bucket on the rear vehicle. The fuel and oxygen production equipment is on the right. Designed during a Mission design workshop during the "Case for Mars 2" conference in Boulder, Colorado, USA, July 1984.1 comments

CfM2: Mars Lander Final Descent – 1578 viewsThe final descent of the Mars lander vehicles is slowed by parachutes and soft landing is provided by rocket engines. The lander in the foreground is a two-stage rocket which will be refueled with carbon monoxide for ascent from Mars, landing on with its primary stage rockets.1 comments

CfM2: Unloading Cargo Craft / Emmart – 1366 viewsUnloading Cargo Craft, bringing supplies from Earth, to set up initial Mars Base. The craft in the background is being dragged to its final location to become living quarters. Designed during a Mission design workshop during the "Case for Mars 2" conference in Boulder, Colorado, USA, July 1984.

CfM2: Vehicles landing on Mars – 1190 viewsVehicles carrying both crew and cargo land on the surface of Mars. The cargo vehicles land on their side while the crewed vehicles land upright. The crew compartment is in the upper stage, necessitating the ladder to climb past the first stage. These 2 stage ascent vehicles are refueled with carbon monoxide and oxygen produced from the local Martian atmosphere. Designed during a Mission design workshop during the "Case for Mars 2" conference in Boulder, Colorado, USA, July 1984.

Inflatable Assembly Tent – 1197 viewsInflatable assembly tent, first one is brought from Earth, others are made on Mars. Side bulges provide extra floor space and stability. Could be about 10 m in diameter. Large modules (~5m) are assembled or wound inside this. Balconies provide tie points for automated equipment and human inspection. Regolith or ice shielding is not shown, and would be optional for an automated version.

MDRS from South Hill, with GreenHab and Musk Observatory – 1371 viewsView of the Mars Desert Research Station
The "GreenHab 2" greenhouse is to the right. The automated Musk Observatory is on the rise to the left. The partially buried water tank is immediately to the left. The south airlock door is facing us. Built by the Mars Society, located just west of Hanksville, Utah, USA. The photo is taken from the small hill just to the south.
